Staying overnight in France

In France, especially the north, it was difficult to find night stops. Nord-pas de Calais away from the coast turned out to be a desert for accommodation (and food). It was little better in Picardy and Normandy. In most towns the cafe and the small hotel have closed. The empty buildings stand desolate. But we discovered chambres d'hôtes, providing bed and breakfast. We needed ones which provided evening meals as in the countryside there was no nearby restaurant. Thus we were forced away from our footpaths and onto minor roads which made for sore feet. In the north, most chambres d'hôtes did not feed us enough to sustain an 8-hour walking day and as they were set in deep countryside there were often no shops to top us up. As we approached the Loire accommodation improved and, as we moved south into the Creuse, was transformed. From Limousin we at last found the famous french cafe, small family run hotels and food to sustain France's culinary reputation. From the Channel to the Loire we were fed just the occasional vegetable and rarely anything green! However the centre, and best of all, the south are a much better story.

Here is accommodation which we have particularly enjoyed. I mention too the rare really bad experience.

Finding places to stay in France is possible on the internet but can take quite a time. Towns and regions do not generally provide sites which list all accommodation and curiously some list none at all. The large number of communes, regions and traditional area names is confusing to the stranger. They may all provide some information. Each needs to be checked out in order to find the right place on or as near to the route as possible.
